Sendmail question

I am trying to get sendmail to allow me to send emails via my ISPs
smtp server.  The turorials I have found are all old and I have not
been able to get them to work -- I have verified my smtp settings.
Does anyone know how I can get this to work? I am using ubuntu 9.
