Are you doing anything for that, sending your user/pass?

I once was able to get an SMTP connection to work just by logging in
to authenticate with some command line utility before the script tried
to run.  I forget exactly how I did it, but it worked, so I had a
little shell script to log me in every half hour so mail could be
processed...

It's on a decommissioned machine or I'd look it up for you.  Sorry.
