ssmtp question

When I use ssmtp from my local laptop through my gmail account it works fine. However, if I change the settings in /etc/ssmtp.conf to use it through my work email address I get:

ssmtp: RCPT TO:<[email protected]> (504 5.5.2 <richard@richard-laptop>: Sender address rejected: need fully-qualified address)

I don't understand why it won't work if does with gmail? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
