I think what Martin is suggesting is that you make changes in your MUA (Mail User Agent) like KMail, Thunderbird etc. >From my experience GMail has allowed me to use From headers completely different than my "[email protected]" e.g. relay is accepted wherein >From is my Yahoo! id but SMTP AUTH is my GMail userid/password. Most likely the "real" SMTP server at your work is configured differently. You need to check the relay configuration in the SMTP server @ work and possibly make changes to allow relay from ssmtp.
