net book (small) install advice

I have an ASUS netbook with about a 4GB hard drive that is currently running
Unbuntu-Gnome but is maxed out on space.  All I really use it for is to run
procmail, mysql and some other perl scripts that manipulate pdfs and text
files. I was wondering if someone could recommend an install for it that
would take up a lot less space.  A graphical interface would be nice as I
occasionally would like to look at pdfs with evince, but if I had to I could
do with out it.  If anyone has any advise on small installs and can let me
know I would really appreciate it.
