My first Asus Eee was the old 701 4G Surf, with a 4GB SSD. I currently have an Eee 900 with the 16GB SSD. I have run #!CrunchBang with great success on both of these machines. The version I used had OpenBox. I'd think the Xfce version would take up more space. The developer is putting out a new version, based on Debian rather than Ubuntu, but it has been slow in the making. I believe the last stable version was based on Ubuntu 9.10 which is still supported with security updates. Good luck!
