I've had good success running Linux (Ubuntu) on recent Dell laptops.
Canonical (Ubuntu's sponsor) has a good relationship with Dell, and they
maintain a list of Dell laptops that are known to work:

If you're OK with used/refurbished, I've found that Dell Latitude D620's run
Linux great and are available fairly cheaply.
