I would agree with James suggestion to try a bootable CD of the Linux distro
you want to use.  I have seen this will show up areas of compatibility such
as missing drivers for specific hardware.  However, with some effort you
could find the driver.  Anyway, what I see is if my Linux LiveCD boots and
works, it will usually install with no tweaking.  If the LiveCD boot fails,
you will probably see the same issue after the install.
