I am a member of other LUGs hosted on Yahoo! as well as Google groups.
  For the Google groups, I had to be invited v/s in Yahoo! groups one
can request membership directly.

To change your individual preferences, each service requires that you
have an email id with the respective provider.

IIRC, it was started back circa 1995/6; Dan Yocum, Keith Garner, Rick
Munday  and a few others (sorry - cannot recall all the names)  were
the initiators.

Also, you can call for volunteers, if you need help with the list
administration.

Can members (w/o Google account) change their preferences?

The other features e.g. calendar is nice.   Given the low traffic of
such activity, I suppose the announcements made in the mailing list
are OK.

My two cents -  let things stay the way they are.  LUNI is a branding
of sorts and that will be lost in going with a Google or Yahoo! group
migration.
