screen flicker: probably not X related

I seem to have developed a screen flicker and perhaps this is something 
someone else on the list has experienced. 

The flicker is noticeable at boot, before the kernel is loaded so I don't 
think it is solely a linux issue. 

It occurs with a nvidia GeForce card and with Nvidia card pulled and booting 
with onboard graphics which is a VIA KM400. Mobo is aGigabyte RZ series.

I have changed to another monitor and experienced the same thing. Both 
monitors work fine on another box with KM400 on a Gigabyte K7 Triton mobo.

Since I can notice it in pre-boot screen display, I've ruled out X-windows 
settings and since it is pre-lilo display I don't think it is my lilo vga = 
790 setting. 

I can find no reference to changing any vga settings in BIOS short of AGP 
frequency voltage which seems to me more the domain of overclocking and which 
by default is set on auto.

Thinking it might be interference from a motor in the adjacent PII vintage 
IPCop box I turned that off but no change. I then disconnected second cooling 
fan in subject box but no change.

I've also tried seperate cabling to power point for monitor and PC and have 
also tried PC on poser lead (with earth) to another power point.

I'm wondering if its the km400 chip but would that matter when using Nvidia 
card? or could there be another mobo chip which might cause this problem?

Google hasn't helped but maybe I've used the wrong search words. Any thoughts 
or comments would be appreciated.
