A-haa..... the dreaded 'Wall Wart" strikes again. If you had mentioned there 
were other bits of equipment in the area around the monitor I may have even 
suggested the transformer in one of those pesky little things.  

CRAFT disease strikes again I guess.... I had forgotten about the effect from 
the "wall wart" that runs the network switch I have...... the power board is 
on a shelf about 450 mm away from the monitor that's used for my 'server 
farm'... any closer to the monitor and the picture starts jumping up and 
down! I guess it comes down to the use of cheaply made transformers and the 
design allowing the magnetic field to extend quite some distance from the 
unit.

I suppose you could always change the wall wart to a switchmode type unit if 
your work area layout forces you to have it located close to the monitor. The 
switchmode ones use a much more efficient transformer design, this would be 
because of the high frequency operation of the switchmode supply as opposed 
to the 50Hz operation of a mains transformer.
