RE: screen flicker: probably not X related

Just a small addition, if you don't know the direction of a diode, the
end with the bar is furthest away from the +ve supply terminal of the
PSU

9V DC power supply might do the trick.  If for some reason the device
running off 7.5V can't handle 9V, put 2 diodes in series with its
positive
lead (I suspect it can, as those wall wards have very poor regulation
and a
7.5V one can exceed 9V under light load).
