Hi Rod!
The camera in question is an internal memory (8meg) 640x480 res, as i 
understand, SD or hi end cameras are treated a little bit differently, 
to be honest, i do not know much if indeed anything about editing the 
kernel, the thing that surprised me the first time the camera was 
connected to a Linux system was how easy it was to get the pictures, 
there was no loading or running of any software, even now, as soon as i 
connect the camera and turn it on it tells me that there are some 
photos  to be downloaded but when i agree to import the photos from the 
camera the message appears and that is the end of the process
