Hi Diane, Sorry to take so long to get this to the list. I read about HAL in the April 2005 Linux Magazine, on hot plugging USB devices. Here is a quote from the article: "Another layer of the hotplugging system provides an interface between the hardware and the application. The Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) (see www.freedesktop.org/Software/hal ) has detailed information for hardware, which is stored in device information files (.fdi). "You can use the HAL layer to make changes for special devices. For example, one user solved the issue of his iPod not de-registering correctly (iPod with udev: http://www.kgarner.com/blogarchives/2005/01/11/fc3-hal-ipod/ ) FDI files are XML formatted files that provide detailed service descriptions. The lshal command gives us the details. The hal-device-manager has the same data but with a neat gui.
