1. Could we have the brand so we know what not to buy?

2. What do you mean by can't recognise it? Like can you mount a cd 
and/or dvd using it or is it useless for that as well as burning? 
Maybe a copy of your fstab would help.

NB if you can mount it but just not burn, it's probably just a 
permissions problem. Need to be a member of a cdrom group or some such.
