In my experience, most of the 802.11b (11 Mbps) stuff and earlier seems to 
be well supported natively.  I routinely use a 11b card in a Linux laptop 
using native (Orinoco) drivers.

802.11g is a different matter, and Linux support for these is much less 
readily available.
