Just in case someone comes looking on this thread I did find a solution.

My problem with mpeg-ps files saved with kaffeine was that I need to convert 
them to something transitional before processing into something I can put on 
a dvd.

There may be another way to do it but using mencoder I can convert a mpeg-ps 
to an .avi then by using tovid (non gui) I create an mpg with av3 sound that 
dvdauthor can turn into a vob/dvd format that'll run in a regular dvd player.

Gopdit works well enough to edit out unwanted sections. It's based on gopchop 
which does the same thing but with a few more options and given too many 
options I'll take the wrong one every time

Once edited I can run mencoder, tovid and dvdauthor from a script while I'm 
sleeping. It takes alot of processor and time. Maybe its time to buy a new 
cpu.
