Have you heard of hplip? It is is a fairly recent project from hp and includes 
hpijs and hpojs. It also includes a gui frontend called "toolbox"  for 
accessing printer/printer utilities and scanner. If sane is onboard you can 
scan using this GUI interface and it works like a treat with printers setup 
on cups.

hplip requires snmp. I'd guess this was to enable access to the hp-psc's that 
have been set up for networking with rj45 connections (not usb only) but it 
might be possible to access the "toolbox" gui on your host box from another 
networked box like this 

With X11 forwarding you might be able to  run "toolbox" on the  host box with 
gui disply on client. I've done this for other things and it works but box 
boxes have to have same username and user id or it won't work.

I never thought to try this since scanning requires human interface to lift 
lid, place paper on scanning bed, etc. 

Are you going to automate that so you can do it remotely too? :^)
