hub.c cannot enable port 1 on hub 1; maybe USB cable is bad?

Hi there - I keep getting this message when I boot into new debian sarge 
installation.

it disables the port and the message keeps appearing on the screen so i 
can't do anything.

Can any suggest how I might be able to fix it or where to look?  I don't 
know what it's referring to.
