I saw a cheapy initio a100u2w for sale for about $70 dollars on everything
Linux.  So I got that and compiled the module (Redhat ES 3 doesn't have it
compiled by default) and I can finally get the status of the tape drive
without any problems.  I've still got problems with my backups though, so
now I have to see if the tapes are getting too old or if the tape drive is
dodgy.  Thanks for the suggestions people.
