slapt-get and swaret (among others)make keeping up to date off the /current 
tree very easy. Slack-10.2 came out the at the end of Sept. By running 
slapt-get weekly or so I would end up with a slack-11.0 in all but name by 
the time the /current tree becomes slack-11.0.

linuxpackages.net is the best place to find contributed packages. The quantity 
increases the longer the latest version has been out. There is also rpm2tgz 
for converting rpm's to slackpacks which I have sometimes used when I 
couldn't find source. Most of the time I just compile and create my own 
slackpack with checkinstall if I can't find the .tgz I want.

Some folk don't care much for slack's package management but I prefer it as 
like everything else in slack, I feel like I'm on top of what's happening. I 
don't know anything about debian and apt but after 3 and so years with 
slackware I'm not much interested in rpm's anymore and I like the fact that 
nothing including KDE has been altered in any way to suit the 
packager/distro.
