Yeah... started out on my Gentoo system with XFree 4.x. One day the
Gentoo devs decided that X.org 6.x was stable enough. I did the
"emerge -DNuv world", and about 2 hours later (it also installed all
the other updates), I was up and running with X.org. I didn't even
know I was upgraded initially. I did have to do a minor tweak of a new
xorg.conf file to get it to recognise my nVidia card, but that's about
it. I could have just kept using the xfree.conf (or whatever it was
called) file...

On a side note, I've been running Gentoo for about 2 years, and never
have re-installed the entire OS or even had an unusable system. Just
continually upgraded. On the (very) rare occasion that something is
broken, it'll usually be fixed within a matter of hours, and a resync
and a recompile will fix it. I'm surprised that you had trouble with
Debian. They're supposed to have the best package managerment system
out there...
