Re: tv and or video in cards for mandrake

I can not say anything specific about mdk-10.1 with any of those cards but 
based on my experience with a dvico fusion dvb-t plus I can tell you this.

It will not be whether ir will work with your distro/version, it's more a 
matter of what kernel version you are running and does it come with modules 
compiled for the card. I had to patch 2.6.11.9 source and compile to get my 
modules but in slack-10.2  I run the optional 2.6.13 kernel and my divers are 
on board.

You will need to check out what tuner chipset is onboard a card and then see 
if/when/what kernel version the modules came on on line. After that you 
decide whether the modules or on board your mdk install or if you need to 
upgrade your kerne. I know that Mark Williamson from 
[email protected] has been building myth tv boxes and he told me 
last year that he did whatever you do with mdk to get new kernels and it just 
worked.

I few other things. 

(1) Even if you get/got a kernel which supports your card, and your using 
2.6.x, you may still have to do a few things with udev before you get the 
devices you need in /dev. 

(2) If I were you I would only consider a digital card (dvb-t) and do some 
research on whatever cards your interested in. I don't think any card 
<$100.00 would be much in the way of digital and most in that range or 
getting a bit long in the tooth. With digital you get what you pay for. I 
paid around $190.00 off the net for my card last year when it was a very 
recent release. It's probably a couple models/features behind now.

(3) For me mythTV seemed a bit of overkill but kaffeine suits us fine at our 
house for digital viewing and recording shows to disk.
