I remember that a colleague of mine had problems with Debian on AMD 64
when the 64bit version of Debian was still new. Meanwhile it seems to be
running without any problems. I've dumped Debian about a year ago and am
sticking with Gentoo now. Although I don't have a 64bit box myself, a
good friend of mine never had any problems with Gentoo and 64bit, I
think. So get Gentoo if you want to be safe. It will also keep your
box busy for a while... ;-)
