Parallel initialization work underway in Cooker

Continuing Mandriva's tradition of innovation, work is underway in
Cooker (the Mandriva development distribution) on a new system for
parallel initialization. One of the main bottlenecks in Linux boot
speed has long been the traditional SysV initialization routine, in
which services are started one after the other in strict sequence.
Starting services in parallel has long been known to improve startup
times, but all the systems so far developed for parallel booting have
had drawbacks of implementation or compatibility with existing
initialization systems. However, the Mandriva community member and
contributor Couriousous has designed a new, simple parallel
initialization system which does not interfere with the traditional
SysV initialization sequence. All it needs to work is a single
executable, a couple of extra lines of comments in each service's
initialization script, and a kernel parameter to enable or disable
the new system. If the new system is enabled, all compatible services
will be started in parallel, with other services that have not yet
been converted to the new system started in the same way as they
would have been under the old system. If the new system is disabled,
the old system kicks in just as it would without the new system being
present at all. The details of the new system are still being
discussed and worked out, but we hope to have it included in Mandriva
Linux 2007 by default and we also hope other distributors will
recognise its strengths and adopt it for their own products. You can
