arecord or ecasound with cm8738

I have an Ensonic 6 channel sound card with a C-Media Electronics CM8738 (rev 
10) chip. 

I've been trying to capture sound with arecord and ecasound directly from the 
card. Boths these aps can do this but I have little success with this 
card/chip. 

Has anyone had any experience with this aps and chip?

In the past I have taken input from line in and mic to audacity but this is 
something a bit different.
