Well, sure they are a for profit company (so is red hat, and Novell the 
backers behind Suse), and I say more power to them. At work I use Suse 
(and we buy support), Debian, and Ubuntu server and Desktop. At home I use 
Slackware and Ubuntu, and even have a Fedora 8 up and running. I put my 
efforts into Ubuntu because I see it as the best desktop alternative to 
Windows The truth is I use whatever tools fits the issue I need solved. 
Most of the members of the Ubuntu Team use all kinds of Operating Systems 
just like all the New Mexico LUGS out there ( and I do consider the Ubuntu 
Loco a LUG "a rose by any other name").  "messianic causes" could be I 
never looked at it that way, but I for one am just glad to see Linux no 
matter what form getting a little attention.

A few years back a bunch of people on the NMLUG list were pimping 
Debian, and only Debian. I have my preferences amongst Linux distros, 
but I always shy away from messianic causes. Canonical, the publisher of 
Ubuntu, is in fact a private for-profit company. Among other things,

"Canonical charges $250 per year for PC support during business hours 
and $2,750 per year for round-the-clock server support. In addition, a

The implementation of Linux is the foremost topic here, and anyone is 
free to make their choice, but with HUNDREDS of choices (distrowatch.com 
covers the top 100) I wish the discussions were more expansive.
