My experience with both VMware and Virtual Box is that VMWare
workstation is by far the more mature and usable product, although it
has been a while since I last looked at Virtual Box. 

As far as clunky pointing devices and screen response in the Windows
VMware guest, installing the "vmware tools" package into the guest VM
resolves those issues for me.
