I've been thinking of playing with the Linksys WRT54G router that you can reflash with a linux os. Lacking a hard drive but I'm sure you can use an external system to capture all of the routers syslog output. http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3562391 is an old but interesting article if anyone wants a little read on it. As for the wireless performance, you might try getting an antenna extender or a signal booster. Dlink / Linksys sell these as well as other.
