I looked back to see if you mentioned how much memory is installed to 
see if a live-cd was feasible, and didn't see it anywhere.  A live-cd 
imposes more requirements of course.  (And I don't know if EMT64 is 
supported.)  But I wonder if too little memory could be a factor with 
the problem itself?  Maybe the freezing is a symptom of heavy swapping?
