I think by force of habit you are overly paranoid. The only analogy I 
have at hand is that I run XP **without** a firewall but with daily 
malware checks. I also check manually because I know from experience 
where they hide.

My point, though, is about a workstation not online, without updates. 
Autodesk Maya is updated maybe twice a year. Once a system is set it 
doesn't need updates for the project at hand. Updating can be done 
inbetween projects.
