Thanks to everyone who's helping. I've now installed grub on the new drive, but realized I never backed up /boot on my original system. Luckily, I do backup the output of "ls -laR /" nightly, and it tells me what files /boot should have. Judging from the below, I just need the /boot directory from a default RH7.3 install. Where can I get this? Can anyone send me a copy? /boot: total 4475 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Feb 11 2003 System.map -> System.ma\ p -2.4.18-3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 465966 Apr 18 2002 System.map-2.4.18-3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5824 Jun 24 2001 boot.b -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 612 Jun 24 2001 chain.b -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 39947 Apr 18 2002 config-2.4.18-3 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Feb 11 2003 grub -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 121784 Feb 11 2003 initrd-2.4.18-3.img -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 473 Feb 11 2003 kernel.h drwx------ 2 root root 12288 Feb 11 2003 lost+found -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23108 Jun 24 2001 message lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Feb 11 2003 module-info -> module-i\ n fo-2.4.18-3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 14431 Apr 18 2002 module-info-2.4.18-3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 640 Jun 24 2001 os2_d.b -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2835238 Apr 18 2002 vmlinux-2.4.18-3 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Feb 11 2003 vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.4.\ 1 8-3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1030147 Apr 18 2002 vmlinuz-2.4.18-3 /boot/grub: total 254 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82 Feb 11 2003 device.map -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10880 Feb 11 2003 e2fs_stage1_5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9808 Feb 11 2003 fat_stage1_5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8896 Feb 11 2003 ffs_stage1_5 -rw------- 1 root root 556 Feb 11 2003 grub.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 11104 Feb 11 2003 jfs_stage1_5 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Feb 11 2003 menu.lst -> ./grub.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9280 Feb 11 2003 minix_stage1_5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12576 Feb 11 2003 reiserfs_stage1_5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 33585 Apr 9 2002 splash.xpm.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512 Feb 11 2003 stage1 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 131008 Feb 11 2003 stage2 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8544 Feb 11 2003 vstafs_stage1_5 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12744 Feb 11 2003 xfs_stage1_5 /boot/lost+found: total 0 To answer some of the other questions: % I actually backup using "rsync -pgDxvvtrlo" as root, so my symlinks are fine. % The drive spins up, but makes a clicking sound after doing so. I've heard data recovery is expensive, even more so when there's a hardware issue. % I think grub is smart enough to understand ext3fs (no?), and will actually recognize /boot/vmlinuz once I actually get this file. % My customizations extend to libraries and binaries, so restoring the data is sadly insufficient.
