SLUG Meeting, Friday 30th May 2003

   SLUG Monthly meeting: May

   When: Friday, May 30, 6:30pm - 9:30pm
   Where: UTS Broadway, room 2.4.13 and (SLUGlets) 2.4.29

   SLUG's monthly meeting, featuring general talks, special interest
   talks and SLUGlets.

   Open to the public and free of charge.

   This month's meeting will be in room 2.4.13 at UTS, and SLUGlets will
   be in nearby room 2.4.29. See the above link for directions and a map
   of UTS.

   The general talk will be divided between Tony Green on the upcoming
   SLUG workshop, and (to be confirmed) Ross Vumbaca demonstrating an ATX
   PowerPC motherboard which he was involved in porting Linux to.

   The technical talk will be given by Robert Collins - Upgrading to
   Squid 3, and using ESI to offload work from webservers.

   As usual, SLUGlets will be running in a nearby room for those who do
   not wish to attend the technical talk.

   6:30pm: Doors Open

   6:45pm: The Usual Suspects
          Q&A - Introduction to SLUG + "What has Linux done for/to me
          lately?" + SLUG News & Discussion

   7:15pm: Tony Green - The upcoming SLUG workshop
   7:35pm: Ross Vumbaca - Linux on a PowerPC ATX motherboard
   8:00pm: Break
          Refreshments in the foyer, for a small covering charge.

   8:20pm: Split into two groups for:

          + Robert Collins: "Upgrading to Squid 3, and using ESI to
            offload work from webservers."
          + SLUGlets: quick talks and discussion of Linux and Free
            Software. This month, discussion of backup and recovery
            procedures.

   Dinner
          Dinner at Spice Boys (Indian), $20 per head.

   Robert Collins: "Upgrading to Squid 3, and using ESI to offload work
   from webservers."

   "Squid3 has a few interesting syntax changes from 2.5, particularly
   relevant to web site maintainers and transparent proxy operators (I.e.
   most ISP's and a number of businesses)"

   "ESI is a module for squid that Zope.com contracted me to write. It's
   an Akamai/Oracle specification that allows surrogates (i.e. squid in
   acceleration mode) to dramatically reduce the workload an origin
   server performs whilst not increasing their own significantly."
   SLUGlets

   Sluglets are for people new to Linux, or who are looking for
   discussion of a milder nature than the techie talk. Feel free to come
   share your experiences with Linux, to get help, or to provide it. This
   month, there will be some discussion of backup and disaster recovery
   procedures.
