I also think it would be wise to go with TIFF or lossless JPEG, as least as the prime archive. Even if it is more than standard DVD media, you should be able to arrange for these to be dumped to a portable hard drive. You can then compress or otherwise filter for regular use. By the way, I think you will find that your JPEG files (which are technically JFIF) will have the pixel density (aka resolution or DPI) embedded. Hence you will know the real size. With camera created photos it is often not required, hence this may not be generally apparent.
