The bad news is that there is, unfortunately, no standard way to  
uninstall applications on Mac OS X, which is a little sad.  The good  
news is that in 99.9% of cases, you can just drag the application's  
icon to the trash, and that's it.  You may still have some extra files  
lying around, but that's typically harmless.

Parallels and VMware are slightly different from the norm because they  
install kernel extensions (kexts), and so they have dedicated  
uninstall programs to completely remove all traces of them from the  
system.

There's also a dedicated uninstaller program named uApp <http://uapp.en.softonic.com/mac 
 >, but I've never bothered to use it.  Honestly, trashing an  
application's icon is fine the vast majority of the time.

P.S. This is for standard Mac applications.  If you're going to be  
playing around in the UNIX/Darwin layer (installing stuff in /usr/ 
local/ or whatever), it falls back to a UNIX system and you're  
expected to maintain that yourself, just as /usr/local/ is self- 
maintained on any Linux box.
