Oh, the important bit I forgot to mention here is that Atom was designed to
deliver per-item payload formats of your choice. So, for instance, you can
have an Atom feed of XML snippets or images rather than just HTML or plain
text (as with the horrifically badly defined RSS). IBM uses this in a lot of
their new software. That's why it's particularly useful for data-oriented
applications.

Plus, you can deliver Atom via XMPP (in the usual manner, or via PubSub),
which can be incredibly handy when polling is Clearly Not The Solution. :-)
