As long as you don't mind somewhat reduced functionality from your
Treo, the iPhone is probably a good crutch in the short term. Unless
Apple is doing something very new, a 3G iPhone in that same form
factor is going to have about 1/2 to 2/3 at the MOST, of the battery
life of the existing iPhone. Not good at all.

For me, moving to an iPhone would be a serious downgrade of my
existing functionality that I enjoy with my Treo 680. Here are some
things I'll immediately miss:

1. No cut-n-paste at all

2. No proper keyboard (i.e. can't use it without staring at the screen
to type). I can type on my Treo without looking at it at all, because
I know where most of the important keys are.

3. No user-servicable battery

4. No "Notepad" style application

5. To add anything useful you have to "jailbreak" the device.

6. Does not sync with Linux and requires iTunes to link to the
Windows/Mac desktop

7. Ridiculously fragile

The battery life on my 680 is absolutely phenomenal. I too bought the
2400mAh Seidio extended battery which works well as a backup or for
extended travel, but the standard battery has served me well for a
long time. There's quite a few things you'll want to do to
dramatically increase battery life on the 680, and I wrote up several
of those on my blog as well (ironically on the same day as the iphone
post above):

I get about 1-2 days of battery life out of my stock 680 battery with
about 3-4 hours of talk time each day on it.
