that's more or less what I seem to have discovered

so, my understanding is, mobiles fall back from HSDPA to whatever is
below, until they end up at GPRS if nothing above connects, if that's your
understanding?

so, potentially, I might be able to connect as GPRS or perhaps Edge or
something like that

on second thought, as I'll be there only a short period of time, and,
across several countries, it might be pointless, I might be better off
seeking WiFi areas
