The source being open, but lack of interest will kill things (look around sourceforge youll find thousands of dead projects). Id put my money on another open source DB filing the gap rather than betting that people will pick up mysql and continue. Mysql was very easy to use (comparatively) and drove the LAMP architecture. But its example has not gone unnoticed. Thus it beauty of patent free open source.
