I had a similar issue upgrading the ram on a laptop.
The 400Mhz (?) was $100 / 1gb, the up-spec 553Mhz was $20 / 1gb

It 'worked', sort of.  I could only put the up-spec in the second
slot.  The original dimm had to be left in slot0 to even boot up.

I guess the bus tried to go up to the ram speed, but something in the
chain wasn't fast enough.  Having the slower ram in the first slot
established the correct speed I gues, and forced the second slot to
the same lower speed - which of course the up-spec ram could handle.

At least that's the mumbo-jumbo I used to explain it.

The result was 512+1024 instead of 1024+1024. Which is good enough.
