MySQL lives on as Drizzle and a bunch of other truely open source
projects. Back in 2008 Monty had this to say about Drizzle:

In particular these two points:
* Drizzle is what MySQL would be with a more interactive community
involvement in the design of the software itself, and had targeted
website deployments.
* Drizzle is a smaller, slimmer and (hopefully) faster version of MySQL;
If there is a need of a database that is closer to what MySQL was then
that too can be resurrected from the open source version of MySQL.
Quite honestly Monty was happy to take the money SUN gave him for MySQL
but has no right to complain about what SUN does with it including
selling it to Satan ^H Oracle.
