If you don't mind the possibility of a few bugs on the 3D side here and there, Dave Airlie has been doing excellent work on the free (as in freedom) drivers for Nvidia cards, Nouveau[0]. They're the default Nvidia drivers in Fedora 12, and there are also packages for Debian and Ubuntu. Although I'm completely talking out of my arse, I think it's likely they'll integrated in the next Ubuntu LTS release. The Nouveau wiki has a great page[2] listing the status of various features (2D/3D, outputs) in the drivers. The NV30 looks like your best bet.
