8 char wep key

I was at a local club where they have WiFi with an 8 character ascii WEP
key, which I can not enter into my Palm as it enforces 5/13 ascii
characters,

I presume windows allows such length keys, as they showed me a windows
screen shots 'how to enter wep key', I gather system hashes the 8
charchters ?

knowing the 8 char wep key, is there a way to figure out what I need to use ?
(convert to hex and use 1st 10 hex characters?)
