Yes, I think what you plan here is the most cost-effective thing to do.

Two minor comments:

Note that the adversary might simply replace the logon.exe on the
stick with a trojan horse version of it to compromise your own PC
and/or record your password.

And remember that many commercial products are not as secure as one might
think, e.g. they just hide a partition on the usb stick..



I actually prefer uploading stuff to my server or serving it directly
from my laptop with gatling. Don't usually have any usb sticks on me..
