Australia needs telecommunications reform something chronic, so yes NBN
is a good idea. Both the ALP and LNP options were an improvement AFAIK.

Conroy for all his failings on the Great Firewall issue does still
deserve credit for the ALP NBN offering his department compiled, which
IIRC vastly outweighed the LNP equivalent.

In real terms such things already do exist, just not for our
consumption.

In economic terms, we can't afford not to fix and expand upon the
infrastructure we have. We can't afford to lag too far behind while the
UN is pushing for the 'net to be considered considered a human right,
and countries like Finland saying 1Mb/s is already a legal right and
expects that 100Mb/s will be in 5 years time.
