I never had issue with that, and I have the joy of living in a place that has
poor enough reception on their 3G network that it falls back to 2G roaming.

Theoretically the network delivers that performance, too, so this isn't a
great surprise to me.

This I agree with, although I find it acceptable for non-interactive use
everywhere I needed it.  Not great, but acceptable.

I would actually second the Telstra/Optus (or resellers) suggestion if you
want good data.  Internode sell a 3G mobile data solution, from the Optus
network, and continue to fail to suck as an ISP.
