low overhead av/win?

what's a 'reasonable, low overhead' av for xp?

we have several 'older' XP 512MB, initially used Avira av, user upgraded
to 'best value' Avira security suite, it now takes 5 minutes for XP
desktop to fully load, disabling spam email/etc add ons doesn't really
help
