Hi Beth,
FreeNAS is operating system so you would not need to install Debian to
run it. Its based on BSD. You can just download the appropriate FreeNAS
CD or DVD image and then put it in your machines and follow the prompts.
You would not be running Linux (or Debian Linux) but an operating system
called BSD. FreeNAS has a great control panel that you can use from your
web browser.
Unless I am mistaken (and feel free to correct me) maybe just by
downloading a different image and starting again you can get to the same
end point without assistance ( or paying some one).
