Ann: Tri-XML Meeting January 2006: IBM's Autonomic Solution Install

A short announcement. Given the potential impact I thought some JUG 
members might be interested:

For the January meeting, we're kicking off with Dragana Mendel of IBM, 
on Autonomic Computing Solution Install.

Dragana explains in her own words:

Constant competition in the market place forces companies to continually 
grow their IT infrastructure in order to meet business requirements. 
Such IT growth is frequently impeded by system failures and human errors 
that arise from deployment of new solutions into complex, distributed, 
heterogeneous environment. Contributing to these difficulties is a large 
number of installation, configuration and maintenance mechanisms with 
unique system administration tools and different distribution formats. 
The lack of common installation behavior requires IT staff to spend 
additional time mastering each installation procedure and 
troubleshooting the effects of an installation across the system.

To reduce the complexity associated with configurations, installations 
and upgrades, IBM has developed Autonomic Computing Solution 
Installation (SI), a standardized approach that helps to automate 
certain aspects of the change management process. SI provides a common 
install definition in XML format to describe software components, their 
aggregation and their dependencies.

SI provides a consistent install technique across platforms, up and down 
the software stack, through the various life-cycle operations (install, 
configure, update, migrate and uninstall) and across different vendors' 
implementations of the installation environment. Because of that, 
product developers that build and package complex componentized software 
components in multiplatform environment need to learn only SI 
methodology, not multiple install techniques for each operating system 
they support.
