Similar things are happening in India Earlier there was this catch 22 situation And it was hard to get a job, for a fresh graduate. Now a graduate can get a job easily if (s)he has an engineering degree (which a LOT of people have in India) (s)he would survive for less salary, and get the skills in a years time. Salary in india has a wide spectrum from 3000 US $ a year to 40k US $ !! And that is the key difference. My salary was 14k US$ (and that was best before 2 yrs, I had 4+ yrs of java experience) now my friends get double in bangalore. I work in US now :) Economy is doing well, and so is IT But I would still agree 90% of the programmers I work with (even here) do not want to pick up one book to understand some fundamentals Rather they rely on copying code from help documents and/or google. If google goes down, there would be no work for days :)) The result is speghetti code sysadmin's nightmare unscalable applications and 100 bugs per day Recently I have had interviews where they see my resume and all they ask is "have you done this?", if I say yes, I am done!
